Courtney is filling out a job application for the grocery store, neatly, line by line.
She knows most of the answers
until she reaches the end,
where it asks for two references.
Courtney isn't sure what that means, so she asks her friend Lupe, who works there.
A reference, Lupe explains,
is someone who can vouch for you, 能为你担保的人,
who will tell the boss you would be a good worker.
It should be someone who knows you well, but not family or friends.
A former boss, a teacher, or a counselor is perfect.
And one more thing, Lupe Otts.
Always ask people first, before you list them,
so they aren't caught off guard
when the call comes.
Courtney chooses a woman she cleans house for and her English teacher.
It is a small lesson, but a real one.
A job isn't only about what you can do.
It is also about who is willing to say, I believe in this person.
